Weekend Workout

I have decided to dedicate my weekend posting to fitness related information only, in hopes that it will help me stay motivated to reach my goals.

Most weekends start out as lazy days for us waking up around 7:00am and hanging out in our PJ’s until 10ish when Little Guy takes a nap.  During the warmers months we would all head outside for a long walk or playtime at the park, but since it’s February and it does get above freezing some days I have had to alter my fitness game plan.  Last week I started waking up at 6:00am every morning and doing a 20 minute cardio workout, I consider it my “Mommy Me Time.”  I do a few quick things each night before bed every night to make it easier to rise and workout at 6:00am.  The most important thing for me is to set my coffee pot to brew at 5:45 am, if I can sleep the coffee I am more likely to get out of bed.  The out thing I do to prep for an early workout is to set my clothes and sneaker right next to the bed and put my robe and slippers in the closet, this way I roll out of bed and dress ASAP.  After a quick sip of coffee I head to the basement, turn on the news, and do my cardio routine.  Once my 20 minutes sweat session is over I get a refill of coffee, a nice hot shower, and if I’m lucky I even have time to check emails after I get dressed.

So far I have been a little sore and I am tired earlier than I used to be, But it is well worth it.

Starting Weight: 155

Current Weight: 150.5

Endeavors and the perfect fit

Shopping today I found nothing that I was looking for so I took it as a sign that what I have in my closet is good enough.

The photo shoot is tomorrow morning and I set today aside to go look for a few items that were suggested to me. I only went to two places. The Good Will and Marshalls. I did find a pair of almost new Liz Claiborn black pumps that fit me perfect and will be great when I don’t want to wear boots with my pants. I also found an adorable black dress. It’s dressy and I have no idea where I would wear it. I just couldn’t pass it up it fit me perfect and was 1/2 off at $7.50. How could I possibly go wrong? Maybe Christmas next year???

I put a boat load of clothes on at Marshalls. The dressing room attendant was very serious about her position and very, very professional. I took the first 10 pieces in with me. I found myself talking out loud in the dressing room asking “who buys this stuff?” All those tops and shirts that make most of us look pregnant? Seriously. They look so cute on the hanger and then…I was thinking that I am just completely out of style and fashion.

Why do I feel like everyone else can wear the clothes that I was putting on today and it just isn’t my style.

I guess that’s it. It isn’t my style. I like clothes that fit. More of a fit, not tailored. I like my clothes to fit my body and move with my shape. I know too, that I do not like all the bright, bright colors on me. I think I’ve gotten used to wearing jeans so much that it’s hard to really get dressed. Tonight I put an outfit together out of pieces from my closet that I’ve had for a long time…. I looked smashing darling! I’ll wear it to the photo shoot tomorrow.

I’ll do my best modeling swagger in the morning and pray that something great comes from this endeavor.

I had two new clients today that were very happy with their haircuts when they left. That’s what makes my day. Happy clients who love what I do as much as I do. :)

God answers prayers…on His time, not mine. My Mother reminded me of this fact earlier this week.

Let go and let GOD. FAITH…walk in it, not by sight.

See, Hear and Feel - so your Subconscious will understand.

The other day my friend and fitness mentor, Narina Prokosh, tweeted about an article by Melonie Dodaro on affirmations. The article gives great advice on how to maximize the benefit of making affirmations a part of your daily routine.

Today, I want to speak to one aspect of the article. In it, Melonie says “When you add sound, emotion, and physical feeling, the affirmation process becomes a more powerful change agent, deepening the effect in your brain.” This is because your subconscious mind can only fully comprehend something that it can see, hear and feel. In other words, it’s great to have an affirmation about being ‘happy’, but your subconscious mind cannot grasp the concept of ‘happy’ unless it can see, hear and feel what happiness means to you.

this makes me happy

Flowers on the Deck

To make it clear, write a few lines about what you would actually see when you are happy; see what you are doing, where you are living, what you look like now that you are living in happiness.

Now write down what you are saying and what others are saying about you, as a happy person. You might write something like: “I have never felt so energized/empowered/ blissful”. Others may say “You look radiant! I’ve never seen you look better/healthier/more glowing!” or “ She’s so much fun to be around, I really enjoy spending time with her.”

Finally, remember what it feels like to be happy. Take the feeling from a wonderfully happy memory and magnify it for your whole body to experience. Concentrate on that feeling until your entire body is completely enveloped in the physical experience of “Happy”.

Now that your subconscious can see, hear and feel what it means for you to be ‘happy’ it will make it much easier to effect the belief change you are making. Now you have your subconscious mind on side. You are open to seeing all the things that make you happy and bringing those things to your awareness – delivering you the happiness you desire.

Check out Narina’s site and Melonie’s too. Enjoy!

Day 5 - Legs & Back

Legs & Back was a beyotch! I thought it would be the easiest weight workout for me because my legs have been pretty strong, but now…My legs feel like noodles. I’m going to feel it in the morning and I’m looking forward to it but at the same time not.

My pull-up bar came, but as it turns out it doesn’t fit on any of the doors in this bloody apartment so I had to use resistance bands. I got creative and used one of the hooks over the sink in the kitchen. Luckily it’s right pretty much in the doorway to the living room so I don’t have to go very far. I’m going to get a door attachment and do that workout in my room, that way I don’t have to pause and come back everytime.

Tomorrow is Kenpo, which involves a lot of kicking and I’m pretty sure I’m going to want to die trying to kick my legs any higher than knee level.

My obliques are a little sore, I want my abs to be the sorest thing on my body. Tonight I breezed through the in/outs and the forward bicycles, the backward bicycles sucked and heels to the sky just was not happening.

That’s ok though, I’m going to rock every single workout next week and become the queen of P90X, at least Phase 1.

Day 45-48 Weight Loss- February 19-22, 2010

Day 45-48

Weight- ???

Food Consumed-  ? Calories

Many Footlong Chicken Breast Subs.

Workout-

Did some core exercises on my exercise ball. Went to the gym and worked out tri’s and chest on Friday. Went to the gym today for back and shoulders. Did some HIIT on the elliptical at the gym (x2 10 minute sessions)

Supplements taken-

Took some multivitamins in the morning. Had protein shakes with creatine after gym workouts.

Overall thoughts-

Sorry for the lack of updates recently and pictures. I would have one up for tonight, but my photographer is asleep. Busy, busy weekend full of fun. My past 2 gym sessions were GREAT, I definitely am noticing improvement. Maybe the gap of time in pictures will make things more noticable ;) . Despite my relative lack of updates here over the past week, I will continue my normal daily postings starting tomorrow. Everything is going wonderfully so far, I definitely feel differences physically when I touch my arms (I don’t even have to flex to notice them now), and people are telling me they notice a difference when they see me in person. I will have my first weigh in for the past 5 days tomorrow as well, maybe the HIIT have made a difference in that.

Looks like I am going to have to start this over again

Sorry everyone, I did not realize that WordPress.com blogs were completely different from wordpress.org blogs and that WordPress.com blogs are pretty tight with functionality. they work fine as a way of staying in touch with family and friends and would probably be great for someone doing a family tree or something like that, but the WordPress.org blog can take plugins and you can customize it to fit your needs, with the wp.com blog you are stuck with what they allow and cannot use plugins or anything like that.

My first blog was a wp.org blog through 1and1.com my webshost. They do allow plugins but only the ones they provide with the 1and1 blog program, so again that pretty much limits the functionality of the blog. One small thing I wnated to do was that when I make a blog post it would automatically tell you on twitter, facebook, myspace, people string etc that I had made tyhe blog post and the title of the post. I even have purchased a program to do just that, a wp plugin, but I can’t use it with this blog or the former 1and1 blog.

I have downloaded the wp.org to my computer and will be uploading it in the next few days. upload it here and will add the linkls and such that are here back into that blog. you will still be able to see this blog at http://thebicyclenut.wordpress.com

but once the other is fully functional this one will no longer be updated.

I will be posting only to 2 blogs, this one and my fitness blog at www.bodymindgoalsnews.info

Have a great day

Do comeback to this site as I will be posting more and more about bicycles and cycling.

Interval ride - 2/16/2010

Did a short speed ride on Parmer between Metric and Anderson Mill.  Total distance 12.6 miles.

  • Avg speed:  16.1
  • Max speed:  30.6
  • Avg HR:  153
  • Max HR:  167
  • Avg cadence:  90
  • Estimated calories:  1040

Mild headwind going out; estimate 5 to 10 mph.  Ended up with a negative split ride, which makes sense with the helping wind coming back.  Timing on the lights helped out as well, I was able to keep some momentum coming back–luck of the draw.  8)

Key #1 to success in fitness, weight loss, and having the body you want

The first key to getting the body of your dreams or at least a body that isn’t a nightmare is INTENSITY. The biggest waste of time you can do is to just go through the motions with your workouts. Go into the gym and give a half hearted weak sauce effort and you will accomplish absolutely nothing. I don’t care how old or young you are, how out of shape or in shape you are, what medical or injury concerns you have, you need to figure out where your limit or comfort zone ends, and go slightly beyond it. Intensity should be scaled for each individual. Obviously I don’t expect a middle aged or elderly man or woman, or someone with bad knees to workout exactly like a healthy athletic 25 year old, but everyone has that threshold that they can meet and exceed. Figure out what 5th gear is for you, and get in gear and drive fast. Don’t sit their idling in 1st or 2nd gear or you’ll never get anywhere. Watch the video below to see some men and women of different ages and abilities demonstrating the intensity levels that are right for them to improve themselves and reach their goals.

I'm a Late Bloomer

This is something I wrote about myself a few years back. It may have been 7 or 8 years ago.

I wrote several poems about my family. I don’t consider myself a writer although I kind of like what I’ve written.

I’m a late bloomer

Emotions, tears

Doesn’t take much

Look at any child

Innocent, loving, I cherish I’m aware

So I’m a late bloomer

It’s OK, I get it now

What’s happened to me

Was so I could see

Look beautiful Girl

Let’s do something different here

Show others you’re not skin deep

There’s more to you

Even show you

Astonished and wondered

Where have I been hiding?

I’m pretty tough, yes

Find the softer side

I found it and sometimes

Feel silly

I’m crying at things others

Wouldn’t consider

It’s OK, Life hit me in the face

Do I still get uptight?

Sometimes a little high strung?

Remember beautiful girl

God kicked you in the pants

You should really be here

He gave you another chance

To be compassionate and listen

Really listen

Every day is a lesson and a challenge

Use it how you will

You have a will use it

Half full, over flow it

Endless opportunities

I see it now create it

What do you eat?

Last Saturday I got together with my friend Melissa and we made dinner at her place.  After lots of difficult deliberation throughout the week, we decided to make pizzas, vegetable style.  Melissa is vegetarian so that ruled out all my recipes with meat or chicken.  We wanted to make pizzas using eggplants and Portobello caps as the crusts.  As I noted in previous posts, the reason for using vegetables as crusts wasn’t to make the meal low-carb, it was purely for taste.

We basically made a pizza buffet and had a ton of more vegetables for toppings.  We used

  • Peppers
  • Onions
  • Goat Cheese
  • Mozzarella Cheese
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • Shrimp (I needed something for protein!  She stole a couple…)
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Sun-dried Tomatoes
  • Tomato sauce
  • BBQ sauce

Here’s what they looked like

Melissa about to lose a finger...

Ready to get baking

Sliced and ready for the oven

Prepared and ready for the oven--Hers

Melissa's variety

My first plate

Best part about these?  You get to eat like 10 pizzas because each one is small and low-calorie.  Plus you get to try a million different variations so no pizza is the same.

So here’s the first question–how would you top your pizzas?

Second question:  What do you eat for breakfast before a workout, or anytime before a workout?

I used to be able to have a big bowl of cereal and granola with yogurt or milk, but lately this hasn’t been sitting as well in my stomach; I don’t know if its the dairy or maybe just a couple bad days, but I don’t feel like risking a workout on it.  What I have works the best for me, among other a couple other things, is oatmeal and protein powder.

I call it, workout souffle!  Mix between 1/2 a cup and a full cup of oatmeal with 1 scoop of protein powder, some egg whites or EggBeaters, and a banana.  Add an appropriate amount of water (or milk if it suits you).  You can also mix in peanut butter or handful or nuts too.  Here’s how mine looked:

Adding protein powder

Completed

I mean, not the most appetizing looking thing, I know I know, but it tastes fine and its straight rocket fuel for me.  Check out how fluffy it was…

See how it maintains fluffiness- almost like a mousse

As with everything else is my training–whatever gets the job done!

Let me know what use for fuel!

And stay tuned for my first video next week on the importance of dynamic stretching and how to do it!

The Running Bug

not exactly aiming to be in Sydney Bristow shape...

Well apparently I have been absolute rubbish at blogging in 2010! I am going to blame it on business, however, as the spring semester here at Smith College has been taking over my life (naturally) as well as study abroad applications taking up a huge chunk of my time (I ended up applying to Oxford and Glasgow, how exciting!!!)

One of the biggest changes I have been making in 2010 (besides creating collages!) that has been taking up time is my new-found love of running. In high school, we had to run a mile for the “Presidential Fitness Challenge” and I more often than not would just choose to walk it. Whether from laziness or embarrassment at my own incapability of running a mile, I would ignore glares from my gym teachers and complain my way around the track.

Now, while I still have what will probably be a lifelong hatred of gym class, I decided at some point last year that I was going to make myself run a mile. First I had to reach the goal of running 10 minutes straight, which I accomplished a couple of weeks ago. Then came the mile. Then on this past Thursday, two straight miles. It has been such an incredible feeling seeing myself get into better shape and watching my endurance go up. Though I still need to tackle healthy food (eating a box of Tim Tams sent to me from Australia is so worth it, though!) I am so proud that I have finally hit my stride with exercise and am meeting my goals.

mmm, tim tams

Why Elliptical Trainers are Growing in Popularity!

If you work out at a health club you probably noticed that in the last few years there are fewer treadmills, because they are being replaced by elliptical trainers. And although treadmills still outsell ellipticals in total numbers, elliptical sales are growing at a faster rate.

What is driving the popularity of elliptical trainers? There are two factors that make elliptical trainers so appealing:

Low Impact Workout

Upper and Lower Body Workout Benefits of a Low Impact Workout

Most types of exercise require some type of impact and/or reverse action. For example, when you walk each step is impacting force on your ankles, knees and lower back. That impact is minor in comparison to running, which can be as much as 2.5x your body weight. Over the years that constant pounding can result in long-term injuries and strains.

Elliptical trainers reduce the hazards of impact through an elliptical motion. It feels like you are naturally walking or running without any real impact or reverse action, and yet it is a weight bearing exercise that contributes to building muscle and bone density.

If you look at the side of an elliptical trainer you’ll notice the shape of the motion is like a flat circular pattern. Budget ellipticals tend to be more circular and bouncy, while quality machines have a flatter circular motion and more of an even stride. Regardless, the elliptical motion significantly reduces the impact to your joints, and that is why elliptical trainers are appealing to older individuals and people with injuries. It is becoming the exercise machine of choice for the “baby boomers.”

Benefits of an Upper and Lower Body Workout

The concept of exercising the upper and lower body simultaneously is revolutionary. An elliptical workout utilizes the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, chest, back, triceps and biceps. There is no other machine that offers this benefit. You are not only exercising more muscle group, you are also optimizing your energy expenditure. That means it is taking less time to achieve more results, like burning calories and increasing your cardio capacity. A number of elliptical trainers allow you to reverse the motion, thereby emphasizing resistance to even more parts of your muscles.

By exercising more of your muscle mass you improve fat mobilization, which results in burning more calories and building muscle endurance more efficiently. Certain experts have suggested that this dual action process reduces the perceived rate of exertion. In other words, you are exercising harder without a noticeable difference from a less strenuous workout.

The benefit of an upper and lower body workout, combined with low impact exercising, are the reasons why elliptical trainers are so popular. And there is one other feature that should be noted. In comparison to treadmills, elliptical trainers require considerably less maintenance. That is due to the fact there are fewer moving parts, and less wear from impact.

If you haven’t tried an elliptical trainer, get to your local health club or a fitness equipment store and take one for an elliptical spin. Avoid the budget models and test the machines that are at least $1,000+. They have a more natural elliptical motion and are more stable and durable.

You’ll find that an elliptical trainer can have a major impact on your health and fitness.

Have a king’s breakfast to build muscle and burn fat - Part 1

Every athlete wakes up in the morning thinking that he/she should be faster, better, fitter today than yesterday. Or else his dreams of winning in his game would remain just that – Dream. Any serious athlete wants to improve his performance.

Every morning an executive wakes up thinking that he/should be productive, highly energetic with a Go-getter attitude. He too wants to improve his performance.

That wish puts breakfast as the most important thing you will feed your body every day! You better not go wrong with that…

High Performance Diet and why Breakfast is Important:

We recommend that you always try to get a solid 6-8 hours sleep every day.  During your sleep cycle, after the first 3-4 (halfway) hours, your body start its breakdown. There is no easy way to say it. We Performance Nutritionist call it – Catabolism (Muscle Loss). Your body has depleted its fuel after its last meal and begins to target the fat stored in your body for energy and muscles for amino acids.

Note: You need to know that your muscles are made of 6 types of Amino Acids – Glutamine (60%), BCAA (35%) and the rest being Arginine – these you will find in our products MUSCLEMAX ( to build well defined muscles), FITNEZ ( for aerobics, dance and other low intense workouts and PWRSPORTS ( Endurance and stamina for athletes)

Basically, your body is into a fasting state for 6-8 hours. You must stop this catabolism of your body. You must break this state. That is why we call it Breakfast, which comes from “Break the Fast”

In order to break the fast, jump start your metabolism and get your body into anabolic state you have to supply yourself with high quality protein, complex carbs and some good fats. Add a small dosage of Vitamins to the diet and you have an awesome breakfast.

Your body is made of Protein. So it is vital that you give your body muscle building amino acids. Sports Athletes can get it from egg whites ( and we recommend egg whites for its bio value and easy to digest format) but for working executives who have no time a good thing would be to have  low fat milk & sprouts with fruits like banana .

One of the best ways to get the right nutrition after your workout/exercises is taking MUSCLEMAX or FITNEZ. Since this pure form amino nutrition requires less digestion than other sources of protein, muscle-building amino acids reaches the blood and muscles quicker, spontaneously starting growth and repair.

This is Nutrition convenience at its best. Just rip open a sachet, pop it in your mouth and wash it down with water.

At BODYFUELZ we offer customized Nutrition and Diet plans with next generation amino nutrition. Get in touch with us at pmt@bodyfuelz.com or call 1800-200-4500 to see how we can help you become better high performance sports athletes, a fitter and productive professional or wanna plan your weight management program. We have solutions for you.

Menopause and weight gain

I wrote several months ago about gaining weight and menopause. After going through a number of blood tests and saliva tests my doctor helped me adjust some vitamins and nutrients that I was missing. I also took out a number of foods in my diet that were giving me some odd symptoms.

We have all heard it in the past to take away the white flour and white sugar. No nutritional value. Well after being off of those for eight months now I am feeling great and I have lots of energy.  I am not saying that taking those items out of ones diet will be easy. I was a huge sweet eater but now I don’t miss it. I also stay away from white rice and a number of other items. I do miss sushi. I know they make it with brown rice but when I inquired about the ingredients some places do add in sugar or corn syrup and I stay away from those items.

I have spoken to a number of female friends and when I tell them what I no longer eat they state well I would miss those items too much. My question to them is how bad are you feeling?  I found that by staying away from  those foods and a few of the foods that I have allergies to I didn’t realize how bad I was feeling.

Most of the articles that I do read from the organizations that I belong to the nutrition sections do state to stay away from the whites and  other food items such as processed foods. I guess you really don’t know how you are feeling until you stay away from certain foods.

I do need to tell you that I did take off 10 pounds without trying. When you cut out the flour and sugar you do take away a lot of your junk foods such as pizza, bread, pasta, (I eat brown rice pasta) chips, and sweets such as all cakes, cookies, oh and don’t forget my (was) favorite margaritas. At this point and time I am enjoying the reduction in headaches, abdominal bloating, cramps and tiredness Oh don’t forget the mood swings and hot flashes.

You do not need to be menopausal to take away the flour, sugar and processed foods. Start now and give it a month. Anyone can do anything for thirty days. You just have to set your  mind to just do it.  Once you are feeling better ask yourself is it worth going back to eating the way you did?

It is a mind-set. You do need to set your mind to what do you really want to carry out? I guess I was too tired of being tired. I also found that doing my short isometric exercise routine in the mornings does help me mentally because then I dont have to think about it later in the day. It’s finished. Start your day with a smile on your face and state what a great day it is going to be:)

Day 34 Weight Loss- February 8, 2010

Day 34

Weight- 223.2 lb.

Food Consumed-  ? Calories

x2 Footlong Chicken Breast Subs.

Workout-

Did some core exercises on my exercise ball. Today was Back/Shoulders at the gym.

Supplements taken-

Took some multivitamins in the morning, had a protein shake with creatine after workout.

Overall thoughts-

Feels good to be back in the gym again, another great workout. Feel like I am going to be really sore after this one. On workouts that I have done before, I improved upon them again. We also tried some new stuff, so we are getting some variation (although it is making keeping track of it all very difficult). Good stuff.

dessert for breakfast

So KloĆ© must have been reading my mind last week — I was griping about being sore and stiff yesterday and then I read up on her latest challenge – stretching! Wooooord.

So I tuned in for about 30 minutes of MTV’s Jersey Shore marathon this morning and I did just that. I have a couple of tender spots on my left leg: my hamstring area and -after consulting an anatomy chart online- what I think is either the pectineus or brevis adductor (aka my groiny). It just feels like a band of tightness going across. Not comfy. So I focused on those areas. The hammies are easy to stretch but the groin muscles are a little bit trickier.

I don’t know jack about yoga, but I’ve picked up some of the basic poses, and the cobra, lunge and bound angle poses have proven great for stretching the groin muscles.

I’ve been meaning to start practicing yoga regularly, but there’s not a studio in my little town — the closest one is about 20 minutes away; and the ones that come highly recommended are all the way across town. I have come to despise the gym and I really don’t wanna go there anymore but I need to figure out what I’m going to do instead — and soon. Hubby and I only pay about $33/month total for our gym memberships, but that’s still $16.50 down the drain every month that I don’t go. Blah.

I made an uber decadent waffle for breakfast –I used lowfat greek yogurt, raw unsalted almond butter, cinnamon, maple syrup, banana and some blended almonds left over from the last time I made almond milk. It’s just the puree that you strain through the cheesecloth — instead of throwing it away I’ve been using it as a topping. I swear the waffle is under there somewhere…

And a nice, hot cup of coffee with almond milk…

We’re having a few friends over later on to watch the SB — since we hate the Colts, nobody in Indy wants to hang out with us today (!), so it’s going to be low-key. I picked up a couple of new beers and a quart of Patrick’s famous Brick Street Blond Chili — it has actually won awards and I can’t wait to gorge myself on it later.

Have a great day — go Saints!

Little: Like the first day of school

This morning, I went to the first day of my LearntoRun10K clinic. I got up early, ate a light breakfast, and talked myself away from every little worry and anxiety. I laced up, and walked over to a local church basement. I learned about layering and shoes, and met the 45 other people in my clinic. I think (I hope!) I even made two potential running buddies. This girl who has never been a runner did her intervals and stayed solidly in the middle of the pack, smiling ear-to-ear the whole time.

But most of all? I showed up, I committed myself, and I did it.

Bring it on, running. Bring. It. On.
