happy not spring!

So someone forgot to tell Indiana it’s spring. It happens every year; we get gypped out of spring and go right into sweltering 90 degree summer. I didn’t know what sweat was until I moved to the midwest. I remember the first time I went running outside when we moved here. It was in the 80s and when I got back it looked like I’d just hopped out of the shower. I was incapacitated for the rest of the day.

Anyhoo – I went baaaack to the gym this morning but it wasn’t so unbearable at 10 a.m. on a Sunday. Pretty quiet, which I likes.

Before I left I did a couple dozen or so pushups and probably about 80 crunches in the living room. Then at the gym I ran 20 minutes, lifted (legs and back) and then grunted out a tedious 25 minutes on the elliptical. Now I’m having coffee and wondering when would be an acceptable time to crack open a brew-skay. There’s just something about working out that makes me want to drink. (Just me?) There’s a 3Floyds Moloko Milk Stout in the fridge that’s calling my name.

Then Mr. CTT and I are headed over to the Lowe’s to get some supplies. Nothing fun though; boring stuff like filters and fertilizer. I do have a good time looking at patio furniture though. Especially if I’m rockin’ a buzz from the MMS.

All right — you kiddies be good today, peace! :-)

A Little Resolution

What’s your favorite part of your body? Or what used to be your favorite part?

I miss my triceps. I’ve been mourning for them since I got pregnant.

Besides my triceps, I appreciated my calves and my clavicles–really, the whole front area around my shoulders and clavicles. I’ve been missing all these parts, then not doing anything to get them back.

Not anymore. A few days ago I started doing five push ups a night before bed. It’s not many, I realize. One night I actually did eight, but my goal for now is five. I’ll just do five until that’s too easy and then I’ll add some.

I’ve also started doing calf raises, standing on a stair and lifting up on tip toe, then letting my heels drop. Since I started running at the beginning of the year, I’ve developed shin splints. I remembered something about them being caused by the muscles at the front and back of the calf developing at different speeds so that they pull apart.

The back of my calves are looking pretty good these days, but the fronts ache. They are tearing from underdevelopment. Before I go upstairs to do my five push ups, I do anywhere from 25- 50 calf raises.

Soon, I will have the triceps and calves that went missing four years ago. I think the clavicle/shoulder area will take more work but I’ll get to that later, along with the sit ups. For now, five push ups and calf raises until the muscles in my butt and lower legs burn is plenty. Sometimes a little resolution is enough. If I were trying to do 50 push ups or even had 50 as a goal, I would feel discouraged. Five is totally doable.

The running I’ve been doing fixes more than my body. That running is jeopardized by shin splint pain. Getting rid of that pain is enough motivation for me to tip toe/drop over and over.

Once I get two of my favorite muscles sets back to beautiful, I’ll set another fitness goal. For now, I’m happy to have something that I can accomplish in less than one minute. It’ll add up.

What’s the smallest fitness goal you ever set for yourself? Did you meet it?

recommended bodyweight workouts program

TACFIT COMMANDO is a tactical fitness plan situated on the Circular Strength Training scheme. So, if you’re familiar with CST, you’ll realize the inventiveness behind the TACFIT program. I haven’t used TACFIT very much myself, but I do know that it’s a circle coaching program that can be practiced to a mixture of training goals. It was produced to accomplish the fitness demands of military, law enforcement, firefighting, and other agencies where fitness is a requisite. I also understand that there are new classes of TACFIT, and this session is from the Commando division (which I believe is bodyweight-only).

The training protocol for the following workout is…

Every minute, on the minute, for 20 minutes; finish 20 rounds in 20 minutes of:

* 6 Quad Hops to Flat Foot Squat

* 6 Knee Drop Spinal Rocks to Butterfly

* 6/6 Springing Tripods

* 6/6 Swinging Planks. *Note, I only did 3/3 in my video

One of the primary reasons why Circular Strength Training and the TACFIT protocol resonates so well with me is because of the scalability built-into the whole scheme. Not only are the practices ascendable, which assists dramatically with learning, but the actual sessions are ascendible, too.

Most fitness programs out there are 100% scalable, but it’s not built-into the curriculum. Tutors and trainee’s are required to scale their own programs because there is no official standard of what is beginner level versus advanced level, or anything in-between.

That’s actually what makes TACFIT dissimilar. There is no guesswork needed. You follow the formula at the level you can handle, without having to figure out if you’re doing the coaching that is right for you.

Using TACFIT bodyweight workouts program as-is, is the nearest thing to an individualized program that you can receive without having to play around with training variables, or employing a coach to do it for you. It goes very well for its intended purpose, right out of the box. If you’re looking for all-around practical fitness, then I strongly recommend the TACFIT program. You’ll be listening a lot more about it on Physical Living after the New Year.

Charlotte and I after a weekend jog.

So, Couch to 5K has been going really well. So far! I’ve found that it is easier for me to get motivated outdoors, although I’ve probably done about 60% outside and 40% on the treadmill. I recently read this article from the NYT that talks about the differences between running outside versus indoors. The very brief synopsis is that you use more muscles running outside, but the experts that study that stuff still like their treadmills.

I’ll be finishing up Week 3 tomorrow! Hopefully outdoors since the weather has been so nice!

We bought these organic eggs at the Trinity Farms booth inside the building at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market. As I’ve written here before, one of my resolutions this year was to eat less animal products. And, along with that comes an attempt to eat more mindfully, especially when it comes to ethical food production. I think it was Michael Pollan who said that it is a lot easier to trust that your food is produced ethically when you can make eye contact with the people producing it. Of course, eggs are just a small part, but I’ve been looking for farm eggs since I left Jubilee, so I was happy!

Not Just Another Cardio Workout

As I have stated on several previous posts, I am not a proponent of stead-state cardio. It is boring and does not provide the optimal results the general fitness enthusiast looking to get into good physical shape. Jogging, for example, is great for runners. It is specific to their activity and provides measurable results – e.g. I ran 5k in 24 minutes 15 seconds. Even these athletes benefit from variety in their exercise choice and the serious ones take advantage of this fact. I however am not a marathoner. I am saving that for my post-50 years (maybe:)). For me it is HIIT for cardio and a lot of variety within those workouts.

On Tuesday I hit the rower, stairclimber, and jump rope/body movement exercises. Today I went up to the gym track (1 lap = 1/12 mile) and did laps interspersed with body movement and core exercises. My workout partner joined me for this workout because he enjoyed last Thursday’s HIIT workout so much.

Pre-workout warm up was the bike ride to the gym – about 15-20 minutes at a medium pace.

Workout Start Time: 8:00AM

One lap of Lunge Walks

Inchworm Push Ups (while the other person performed the lung walks)

Curl up and get warm

Frozen to the bone! This modeling job does NOT pay me enough to freeze my butt off for three hours.

More than uncomfortable is what I am when I model for this place. I asked the woman at the front desk if they could please get a space heater for me. I explained to her how cold I am modeling there. She said she would ask. I hope they have one there next Wednesday because I was asked to model again.

“A beautiful neck. The most beautiful eyes. Thank you so much. This was my first experience and you are absolutely beautiful and a great model.”

A new student in this class this morning came up to the stage platform, where I was posing in a laying down position for the final pose of the day, and whispered in my ear those words.

She seems to be such a sweet woman. She is a new artist that has just finished the beginner class and is now in the advanced class. She is very good for just starting.

It was a small class today. I just wanted a blanket so I could curl up and get warm.

Milk? Water? Both?

Can I just tell you how much failed workouts piss me off?

GRRRRRR!!!

I was all excited about gettin’ my endorphins flowing yesterday…and I ended up having to cut my workout short again.  So sick of being sick!  My body was still not gung-ho about getting my sweat on, and about 20 minutes into my cardio sesh, I decided any further strenuous activity was a bad idea.

Damnit!

Did a quick (resentful) cool-down, and called it quits.  Then I promptly came upstairs (I was using the ‘rents basement treadmill) to complain to Mi Madre and my couster.

[Um, woopsies.  Just realized I didn’t even stretch.  I was maaaad.]

Anyway, in roughly an hour’s time (when my stomach has done it’s digestive thang), I’m gonna give it another go…except this time, I’m gonna take it slow and only do what this bod wants to do (and try my hardest not to get pissed at it).  I wouldn’t even push it, except that I feel 100% FINE – I’m just sinus-y, which really affects my breathing.  UGH!

Let's Get Naked!

March 13, 2010.

Day 72.

Here it comes, ladies and gentlemen. Here it comes. I have some news. Ready?

(Drumroll, please…)

I looked at myself in the mirror today…NAKED!

If that statement shocked, disgusted, or offended any readers, feel free to leave now. I’m on a mission of self-love, and I don’t need any Negative Nancys around, stopping my progress.

However, for those of you brave enough to stay, know how important it is to be able to look at oneself as naked as a newborn babe, without feeling one’s gag reflex rising. And I was able to do that. I felt a sense of surprised relief standing there, knowing that, yes, I have some areas to work on, but my body is not disgusting. Looking at the whole of me allowed me to honestly observe and accept myself, warts and all. (No, I do not have warts. I don’t think.) I felt a certain splendiferous freedom in knowing and accepting, that is, until I went to Target and could barely fit into a pair of size 16 khaki pants.

How disheartening.

Just last week, I made it (with some effort) into a pair of size 14 black pants. “What happened?’ I asked myself. In order to not lapse into a complete state of total depression, I resigned myself to the thought that maybe the khakis were made too small. You all know that old excuse (lie) we tell ourselves when our already balloon-sized clothes don’t fit; I went right to that one. But, I guess not working out and eating everything in sight wreaked a bit of havoc. Pfft.

Still, I didn’t leave Target without a few goodies!

Let’s see:  Apparently Maybelline New York had the stuff that I wanted, the stuff that I NEEDED, because I walked away with a majority of trinkets from their Eye Studio line, starting with their Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Brown. I’ve been on the hunt for a sick gel liner for a while now, and although I mistakenly switched Black color I really wanted for the Brown, I can still pair the color I got with a bold green or brown shadow for extra oomph, or maybe I can even use the liner by itself for a subtle day look.

I also picked up an Eye Studio Color Pearls Marbleized Eyeshadow in Carbon Frost, which boats a star-studded black shadow that co-stars with a marble (hence the name) kaleidoscope of colors with a dominant pink theme. Had to have it.

This is the color duo I got. Gawjus, yes?

And after hearing rave after rave about an oldie-but-goodie, I finally scooped up Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara, or as it says on the package, “America’s #1 Mascara.” Tried it on. Nice.

To round up my beauty shopping spree, I finally got a Milani eye shadow in Shamrock, the color that has haunted my dreams ever since I fell in love with it at first sight while out with my girlfriends about a month ago. It sits, beside me, on my bed, matching my loving gaze as I dote on it’s perfect pigmentation and sparkly shimmer.

See the green in front? That's Shamrock. The color is mine, all mine!

I also got a Studio Tools eyeliner brush, so that I can start practicing my eye art more frequently.

Aaah…I’m so happy with my beauty finds. I’ll update you tomorrow about which color I wore to church.

I now must work out. Maybe one day, I’ll be able to do this:

Although the video doesn’t show the entirety, she does 11 exercises, 50 reps each, for as fast as she can.

Wish me luck.

Day 72.

P.S. For whoever may be reading this, I welcome all comments you may have. Feel free to leave me a note! Also, I cannot post a weigh-in as I am not in possession of a scale at this time. I’ll update as soon as I return to school!

ACK! Failure!

ACK! This week’s weigh-in was a failure. I wasn’t able to “get into town” to weigh-in last week, and at this week’s I had only lost 3 pounds. I SHOULD have lost 5 pounds, plus the 5 from last week. So, instead of a 10-pound 2-week loss, I have settled for a 3-pound loss. I COULD fall back on the fact that I’m (once again) on the injured list, but, knowing what I know about what I’ve eaten over the past 2 weeks, that would be lying to myself.

I told myself that all un-lost weight would accumulate. So for this upcoming week’s weigh-in (03.18.10) in need to lose 13 pounds, instead of just the weekly 5 pounds.  Will I be able to do it? Probably not, BUT, I must be strong and true to myself.

Genes Vs Environment

Genes vs Environment – This has been an age-old argument, very much like the Chicken and the Egg scenario, both sides have their beliefs backed up with their arguments to try to prove it, but unsuccessfully until now. Although this isn’t by any means a new phenomena, it’s slowly trickling its information across the globe by all sorts of means through all sorts of people, like myself who feel that it is vital that people know the information so they can make an educated decision about their bodies and ultimately their lives.

Dr. Bruce Lipton, author of “The Biology of Belief “ and “The Wisdom of Your Cells”. Dr.Lipton is an internationally recognized authority in bridging science and spirit. A cell biologist by training, his breakthrough studies on the cell membrane, contributed to the new science of Epigenetics and have made him a leading voice in the new biology.

What's Clutter Got to do with Fitness/Weight Loss?

A lot, in my opinion. See my guest post on this topic over at MizFitOnline!!

An excerpt:

It took me a very long while for my healthy bodily habits to become ingrained and “automatic.” And I am suspecting it will take an equally long while (if not longer) to become an “automatically” organized person. If ever.

Here are a few things I’ve observed that are true in both cases.

Procrastination is the devil.

How many times did I used to say, “I’ll go to the Farmers’ Market… later,” or “I’ll go to the gym… later,” or whatever? And “later” stretched into never. I realize that I am the same way about picking up random crap in my house.

I always tell myself, “I’ll do it LATER.” But later, the pile always grows, it always gets bigger, stuff gets lost more easily, and it’s just a hundred times more awful and messy to deal with it later. Same with being overweight. The longer you wait, the more there is to deal with.

2. Sweetwater Creek State Park

The best part about running is the fact that there is so much explore.  You can reach places by foot than you can’t get to any other way.  And by running, you can cover those places faster and find more places.  This past weekend, I drove to Sweetwater Creek State Park.  It’s only thirty minutes from downtown Atlanta and worth the adventure.

To save some money, I parked my car at the local elementary school and ran the mile on Cedar Trace Road to the park entrance.  I love running around water and immediately decided to run around the reservoir.  Surprisingly there wasn’t a path around it.  There’s wasn’t even level ground for running.  Disappointed, I decided to head back to the road and head to the trails.

After another mile of running, I got to the parking lot at the beginning of the trails.  Upon seeing a runner changing out of his sneakers, I asked him for advice on where to run.  He simply suggested to run one trail south and take another trail back north.  His words seemed promising.

Unfortunately, Sweetwater Creek State Park was not made for running.  Although the trails were made for hiking, they were just big enough and firm enough to complete my workout.  There were four trails with most of them intertwined.

Red Trail: Moves along the creek and past the mill ruins.  The paths were big enough to allow passing the many hikers.  The creek was close and offered some nice views.  I had bigger expectations for the sight of the mill ruins, but I barely felt the need to pause as I passed them.

Blue Trail: I accidentally turned off the red trail and onto the blue trail too soon.  The trail was a little smaller and forced me to stop a few times to pass.  There was a slight upward elevation change that turned out to be a big positive.  From the top of the trail, there were absolutely amazing views of the creek rapids.  I might return to this park just for that view and I might even bring my camera.

White Trail: After going as far south as possible on the trails, I returned back to the parking lot on the white trail.  With only slight views of the lessening creek, there wasn’t much to see.  However, there were fewer hikers and it was a nice trail to just enjoy the rest of my run.  There was a section of the trail that went straight upward and continued straight upward.  It might have been annoying on a hike, but was even worse for a sprinter on a long run.

Yellow Trail:  Via a brige, it crosses to the other side of the creek.  I didn’t get to see any of the yellow trail and will definitely do the loop if I ever go back.

Although I haven’t been running much the last few months, my entire run lasted an hour and twenty minutes.  It was great to take advantage of a beautiful day, work on my tan, and explore a great state park in my own backyard.  It’s not the right place for a weekly run, but certainly satisfactory fora daytrip.

Reebok Easy Tone Testing Days #5 & 6

Okay...where can I get this shirt?

The past few days have been quite rainy in San Diego, so I haven’t had a chance to do much testing with the Reebok Easy Tone shoes. My plan was to wear them to my La Jolla Boot Camp on Sunday, however it was rained out!

My plan is to continue with the testing this week, shoot a few more videos, and give them a Boot Camp workout! Stay tuned for more.

I will also be wearing these shoes to the IHRSA San Diego fitness convention on Thursday and Friday…come see me as the Spokes-model for Marpo Kintetics! Can’t wait to take some fun videos.

I’m not quite sure when my obsession with smoothies began, but at this point I would be so bold as to say I have perfected my smoothie recipe.  Smoothies are a fantastic way to hydrate and nourish your body – perfect for an afternoon energy boost, a nighttime sweet tooth sensation, or a simple post workout snack.

Ingredients:

8 oz of liquid – I prefer orange juice, but if you are looking for something with a bit more substance (especially after working out) then use soy milk or milk as a protein source.

1 banana – This is perfect use for those now overripe bananas sitting on your kitchen counter that you swore to yourself you would eat for breakfast.  Its also an excellent source of potassium.

1 1/2 cups of  2 different frozen fruits – I always prefer strawberries and then typically add raspberries, blueberries or even mango.  The secret of frozen fruit is that it adds the coldness to the smoothie without watering it down and you don’t have to worry about the fruit going bad.  Trader Joe’s has a great variety of organic frozen fruit but check out your local grocery store and have fun experimenting with flavors.

Blend all the ingredients in your blender (there should be a “smoothie” function you can use).  Blend until you hear the grinding stop and the blades begin swirling smoothly.  Sharing with a friend? Simply multiply the ingredients by the number of servings.  Serve in a 16oz  glass and for extra flair a straw and if you are really trying to impress someone add a slice of one of the fruits to the rim of the glass.  Enjoy immediately while the smoothie is freshly aerated.

Voila!

*Note the smoothies pictured here were made with 8 oz OJ, 1 banana, 1 cup strawberries, and 1/2 cup blueberries per serving and were enjoyed with 2 amazing friends!

Day-O-Christy

Happy Weekend everyone!

How are ya’ll doing?  Any good plans for the weekend?

Yesterday I was so excited because I was going to meet up with a friend to have a pedicure. I rarely have them done mainly because I can’t see myself paying $25 and up to have someone paint my nails. Although I will say I had one in Rochester NY once, and it was a man doing it… OMG was it fantastic! I got up early and jumped in the shower to get ready to meet up with her, but due to some last-minute conflicting schedules the plans fell through. SAD PANDA! I was way bummed. It was almost 10am and I all of a sudden had the thought “Have a Christy day”. I almost went and had the pedicure any way, but again… $30 for pretty toe nails is kinda crazy to me. Instead I decided to go see Alice In Wonderland at the IMAX! OH BOY! Sure I was by myself… but my need to do something nice for myself was greater than any embarrassment I might feel by sitting alone in a theater. I was a bit nervous since it was the IMAX and in 3D. That could be a nasty combination if the movies camera moves back and forth a lot. (proven by the man trying not to puke outside the door at the end of the movie). Luckily it didn’t bother me one bit! I’m a huuuuuuuge Alice In Wonderland fan. It’s easily my favorite Disney flick, and possibly my favorite movie period. I thought the movie was awesome. Although I will say, not necessary to see it on IMAX or 3D… but I had fun.

After the movie I had to do the grocery shopping for the month. One of my favorite pass times.  $185 for our family of four for the month. Yeah I’m kind of a rock star when it comes to bargain shopping. Of course I’ll have to go back during the month for more milk, eggs and veggies… But when you consider I bought fruit, veg, meat, fish and other essentials… I did pretty damn good.

I didn’t eat much yesterday. I wasn’t trying not to eat, I just was busy and didn’t think about it. For dinner my mother fixed a super yummy dinner. My father went in for a 3rd interview with a local winery, and we were all pretty sure they would make him an offer. So this was going to be a celebratory meal. Steak, mushrooms, veg and baked potato. Unfortunately he has to wait till Monday to get the final decision. Fingers crossed.

I skipped the tater and went with some wine.

Oh so yummy! I was pleased with my eating last night and had an over all feeling of “this was a good day”.

I woke up at 6am this morning. GRRRR! Way to early. I noticed a text sent to me at 12am from a number I didn’t recognize. After ruling at the few people I thought it could have been… I sent the normal “who is this” text. Of course no answer as of yet. I wonder if it was just a wrong number. Very odd.

Today I have to run to Target, Study and do some house cleaning. My friend Shaandi who gave me the chicken burger recipe gave me a new one for Gluten free pancakes. (I have a slight intolerance). Since I have all the stuff to make them, I will be having those for dinner!

have a great weekend! Thanks for stopping by!

Spring is here - at last.

My touring machine

Well, the weather has not been up to much, unless you enjoy snow, so this is my first run out since January. A gentle run into Worcester and back, mainly along the towpath. I blame my inactivity this year so far on weather and swine flu – but I’m afraid I did feel my lack of fitness even on this little loosening run. I could kid myself, but the computer and the heart monitor don’t lie (damn them!).

Got the old touring bike out – it is a lovely ride; you sometimes forget how comfortable steel can be.  I have been doing some work on it over the winter – it is kind of ‘retro’, and I was in two minds whether to make it really classic though I guess the 1980’s MBK frame is not the best foundation to build upon so maybe I will just build for comfort and pleasure.

Fighting for YOU

Congrats to all of the Olympians this winter for fulfilling their dreams and competing in the events. What a great ride with the snowboarding, skiing, skating, hockey & more! All of the hours, weeks, months & years of preparing for their moment in time…

And just like all the time they put into prepping their bodies & minds for the event, we all prepare for the moments life presents. The question is if we’ll be ready for the challenge. Whether playing with kids or grandchildren, stepping up to drive on a long par 5, enjoying a hike with friends, or a fun match of tennis… life presents opportunities and moments. Be ready. What you do now counts.

-PS The Fight for “YOU”

When’s the last time you had a fight with your self? Maybe it was just now when you had to decide whether or not to spend the time reading this. So, who was it that you were fighting with anyway?

As humans, we all share the gift of self-awareness. This ability allows us to distinguish between our thoughts and our “self” that is thinking the thoughts (and reacting or interacting with events and the environment). The good and bad of this awareness is that we can have thoughts that encourage and empower, or judge and criticize.

At some point, we identify our self as a sum of our actions. In other words, what we DO is a part of who we are. In looking at others, comparing and associating, we may identify others by the sports they play, the way they walk, or their helpfulness in cooking, cleaning, etc. And while these actions should by no means be the complete sum of who we are — if we lose the ability to do, we lose that part of who we are.

Hiking the Napali CoastI can remember injuring my knee in a snowboarding accident and having to be laid up for weeks. I couldn’t walk without crutches much less run, couldn’t drive, couldn’t play sports with friends, couldn’t give my girl a bear hug, couldn’t do a lot of the activities that I identified with that made me feel strong, free and alive. The frustration level was high as I judged and criticized myself for the accident and for being unable to be active. Questions ran through my head about having to redefine who I was and how I viewed myself. It’s a scary proposition to have to re-invent yourself or to have to find alternate activities to those of first choosing.

Fortunately, I was eventually able to regain enough function to get back into activities I identified with. But for many, this doesn’t seem possible given their current critical, judgmental thoughts that may be defeating the real ‘you.’ In the absence of an objective view of your self, the path to getting back into daily activities, sports, or just being free and feeling strong may seem insurmountable.

So here’s what I suggest. Come in for a FREE consultation at our clinic. We’ll take some postural photos and go over your condition. Along with that, we’ll give you straightforward answers on what it will take to get you back on track and how you can rediscover much of what you thought was lost from the true YOU. Call to set up an appointment for your consultation. You have nothing to lose but the limiting beliefs gained since your injury or pain started. You have everything to gain, including the self you once knew, loved and appreciated.
