I’m not quite sure when my obsession with smoothies began, but at this point I would be so bold as to say I have perfected my smoothie recipe. Smoothies are a fantastic way to hydrate and nourish your body – perfect for an afternoon energy boost, a nighttime sweet tooth sensation, or a simple post workout snack.
Ingredients:
8 oz of liquid – I prefer orange juice, but if you are looking for something with a bit more substance (especially after working out) then use soy milk or milk as a protein source.
1 banana – This is perfect use for those now overripe bananas sitting on your kitchen counter that you swore to yourself you would eat for breakfast. Its also an excellent source of potassium.
1 1/2 cups of 2 different frozen fruits – I always prefer strawberries and then typically add raspberries, blueberries or even mango. The secret of frozen fruit is that it adds the coldness to the smoothie without watering it down and you don’t have to worry about the fruit going bad. Trader Joe’s has a great variety of organic frozen fruit but check out your local grocery store and have fun experimenting with flavors.
Blend all the ingredients in your blender (there should be a “smoothie” function you can use). Blend until you hear the grinding stop and the blades begin swirling smoothly. Sharing with a friend? Simply multiply the ingredients by the number of servings. Serve in a 16oz glass and for extra flair a straw and if you are really trying to impress someone add a slice of one of the fruits to the rim of the glass. Enjoy immediately while the smoothie is freshly aerated.
Voila!
*Note the smoothies pictured here were made with 8 oz OJ, 1 banana, 1 cup strawberries, and 1/2 cup blueberries per serving and were enjoyed with 2 amazing friends!
